                                        ECHOLINK RULES

ALWAYS ASSUME ECHOLINK IS UP BEFORE YOU MAKE A CALL. ALWAYS WAIT ABOUT 1 MINUTE BEFORE SPEAKING WHEN DIALING UP A NEW NODE, A CONVERSATION MAY BE IN PROGRESS ON THE OTHER END. Please use English Only so conversations will be understood by the Control Operator's They are not Interpters.

First, check to see if the EchoLink is operational and if it might already be connected. Key your transmitter, give your call sign, and enter DTMF digits 08 . If the EchoLink is operational the response will be either "DISCONNECTED" or "CONNECTED TO XXXXX" where XXXXX is the call sign of the connected station.
1.     If EchoLink is already connected, the connected station should hear any transmission you make. Announce your presence - "W9XXX listening via EchoLink, Over."
2.     If EchoLink is disconnected, your choice would be to connect to a station, key in the 4, 5, or 6 digit node number.
3.     EchoLink will respond with one of the following messages: "CONNECTING TO XXXXX" or you may get the response "XXXXX NOT FOUND."
4.     If you got the "CONNECTING TO...." message, wait until you hear "CONNECTED TO XXXXX" and then give a short call. If you got the "NOT FOUND" message go back to step 3.
5.     On occasion the connection is actually made but not announced. If you get "CONNECTING TO XXXXX" followed by silence, enter DTMF digits 08 to get the status of the connection.
6.     If you successfully connected to a station, when you are finished with your QSO, key in the DTMF # to disconnect.

Here are a few guidelines to follow:
1.     If you hear an incoming Echolink Call feel free to make contact and chat with the visitor. Simply use the same techniques for communicating as you would on any other voice medium.
2.     Pause 2-3 seconds after hearing the carrier drop from the repeater before keying your PTT (Push To Talk) to talk back to the visitor.
3.     When the call is complete usually the caller will disconnect by depressing the "#". If not you can disconnect the call with by keying your microphone PTT and depressing the " # " for one second.
4.     Obviously if at any point a station interrupts an Echolink conversation with emergency traffic, all operators MUST surrender repeater usage to operator with emergency traffic.
5.     To test your DTMF microphone simply key the repeater, identify yourself with your call sign and depress the following sequence of tones:  1 2 3 4 5 6.  You should hear Echolink respond with "123456 Not Found" . This is good as it confirms that Echolink can decode your DTMF tones.  Next try 1 2 3 7 8 9 0.  Response will be 1237890 not found.  Finally test your  your ABCD buttons.
6.     DO NOT QUICK KEY!
7.     DO NOT PILE ON ONE COMMENT AFTER ANOTHER, LET THE ECHOLINK CONTACT RESPOND BEFORE ANOTHER PARTY ON THIS END SPEAKS.
8.     SLOW AND STEADY, DO NOT QUICK KEY, WAIT 3-5 SECONDS TO RESPOND.
9.     OH, DID I MENTION NOT TO QUICK KEY?
10.  BY THE WAY, I AM NOT GIVING OUT THE CONTROL CODES TO ECHOLINK OTHER THAN WHAT IS NESSISSARY TO OPPERATE, PLEASE DON’T ASK.
11.  PLEASE KEEP KEYUP TIMES TO 1 MINUTE OR LESS.
12.  DON’T TALK ABOUT PEOPLE ON OTHER REPEATERS THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE ISSUE WITH, I DON’T WANT THAT CRAP ON HERE FOR ALL THE WORLD TO HEAR. “There is a thing called listen in mode that allows you to listen without speaking”. SO, WATCH WHAT YOU SAY.
NO CALLING CQ CQ CQ. MAKE YOUR CALL TO ONE PERSON.  IF THEY DON"T ANSWER, WAIT AWHILE, THEN CALL THE NEXT PARTY. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM BROADCASTING, I.E. MAKING COMMENTS NOT DIRECTED TO ANYONE IN PARTICULAR WHEN YOUR NOT DIRECTLY IN A CONVERSATION.
